Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
Overview
The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards came into effect in April 2009, and affects all staff who work in Health and Social Care with people with diminished capacity, whether temporary or permanent. It has particular relevance to hospital staff and care home/nursing home managers. This half day programme provides an introduction to the Act and looks at the implications for practice, policies and procedures. This can be combined with the Mental Capacity Act Programme into a full day.
The Programme covers:
- an introduction to the Act and the principles that need to be applied in assessing whether a deprivation of liberty may be taking place;
- who is covered;
- what is "Deprivation of Liberty";
- who does what - Assessments and roles and responsibilities;
- processes for assessment and authorisation;
- the roles of Supervisory Bodies and Managing Authorities;
- record-keeping requirements;
- case studies;
- case law developments.
Target Audience
Hospital staff, including doctors, nurses and managers, social workers, care home and nursing home managers and staff.
Prerequisites
Essential to have an understanding of the provisions of the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
